"Qajar" the series of studio-photographs by the Iranian photographer Shadi Ghadirian is inspired by portrait photos from the Qajar period. All the women, we can see in these pictures, are dressed in the period of 19th century clothes and they belong to the artist's family or are her close friends. Backgrounds and stylization of the photographs are nearly identical with the surviving original Qajar period photographs, but still each of them is supplemented with one object reffering to the present day. This all helps Ghadirian to play a game of comparison and contrasts and it makes the viewer think about the dispute of the tradition and modernity in our globalised world. Reflections of how life was different then and is now also brings along thoughts of the role of women and how much it has or has not changed.
